You could say there’s music in A-Love’s veins. Born in 1983 in Rome, Italy to a prolific musician and a soul singer, Antonella Formosa was brought up singing along to Chaka Khan and Joni Mitchell with her mother Vicki, and raiding the jazz, soul and funk records of father Ric, a composer/arranger who was an original member of the Little River Band.

While her first experiences of playing music were strumming Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins covers with an all girl band, she discovered hip hop in high school and soon found herself waxing lyrical over beats. Since then, A-Love has been entwined in Australia’s evolving hip hop movement, featuring on the most influential local compilations to date, Culture of Kings 2 and Obesecity. She has supported some of the biggest names from hip hop’s international underground and appeared on recent albums by Melbourne producer Jase and the UK’s Mystro.

In 2002, A-Love won the highly publicised Nescafe Big Break competition, earning her $20,000 to set up an independent record label. As time progressed, she juggled the twin responsibilities of building a label and working on her own debut as an artist. Under this pressure, A-Love had to refocus her energy into her strongest passion, and soon found herself looking for a home for her music.

Aligning herself with renowned Melbourne hip hop label Crookneck and producer BVA (Mnemonic Ascent/F&d), A-Love found a renewed vigour for writing and recording. The result is Ace of Hearts, a set of lovingly prepared songs that reflect her history, personality and ideals. “The minute that I stepped in the studio with BVA I knew the time was right to record this album”, says A-Love, “I felt hungry and inspired again, it all fell in place. The result is a bunch of songs with lasting sentiment; real stories about real life.”

With contributions from Raph (Mnemonic Ascent), Yungun, Jim Blah, Suffa (Hilltop Hoods) and Jase, the album is one of the most topical, incisive and sonically polished records to emerge from the country’s growing hip hop culture. Ace of Hearts cements A-Love’s position on the national stage and sees her poised for big things.

Ace of Hearts will be in stores across Australia on November 24, 2007. <<Less
